New Investments in PEI Fishing Harbors Dredging

The Honorable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Regional Minister for PEI and Member of Parliament for Egmont, has announced that an investment of approximately $16.3 million is being made at PEI commercial fishing harbors.

Individual projects will be announced over the coming weeks.

Since 2006, our Government has invested approximately $60.4 million in PEI’s small craft harbors. I want the harbors our fishermen work out of to be up to date and safe, whether they fish out of Tignish, North Lake, Seacow Pond, Wood Islands, Skinners Pond or North Rustico. I will continue to ensure our Government makes these important investments,” Shea said.

Recent major projects funded in the province include:

– Wharf reconstruction, and construction of a wharf extension and shore protection at Tignish Harbor;

– Reconstruction of a marginal wharf at North Lake Harbor; and

– Reconstruction of the east breakwater and construction of a service area at West Point Harbor.

Prime Minister Harper announced last fall an additional $5.8 billion will be invested to build and renew Canada’s infrastructure under the Economic Action Plan over the next two years.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada will oversee a total of approximately $551 million in investments across the country, particularly in rural and coastal communities.
