Huffman Nabs Erie South Pier Contract

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, awarded a contract for approximately $950,000 to Huffman Equipment Rental & Contracting, Inc., East Lake, OH to repair damages caused during Super Storm Sandy to the Erie South Pier, Erie, PA.

Work began on April 20, 2015 and is scheduled to be completed by early July 2015.  It includes the removal of some existing concrete, structural renovations to the existing sheet pile supports, placing new concrete where renovations were completed, and additional structural supports in the new and existing concrete cap.

The Erie South Pier experienced excessive damage during Sandy because of the 30+ foot waves and the extreme angle they were hitting the structure,” said CPT Kelly Polashenski, Buffalo District project manager. “We are authorized to use Super Storm Sandy funding to return the structure back to its pre-storm condition.”

The Erie South Pier protects mariners as they navigate between Lake Erie and Presque Isle Bay and is also highly trafficked recreational pier. The repair work will return the pier to a sound navigation structure while also making it safer for the people who use it for recreation.
