New Sand Arrives at Ocean City Beaches

The first phase of the south end beach replenishment project is complete, Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian announced in his weekly update.

Pipe has now switched to pump south toward 49th Street,” Gillian said. “Dune crossover work is ongoing at 37th and 38th streets.”

The beach is currently closed between 43rd and 45th streets, with Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company (GLDD) pumping sand near 44th Street beach.

The sand is being gathered from a borrow site located approx 2.5 miles offshore of Strathmere.

The current project schedule calls for dredging operations to be completed in early July, with equipment demobilization to follow. The project is being overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is 100% federally funded at a total cost of $ 57 million.
