ORC Announces Arrow River Meeting

The Otago Regional Council (ORC) will host a public meeting in Arrowtown next week on the Arrow River’s flood and erosion hazards. ORC natural hazards staff, who have been researching and modelling changes in the river, will present information on the hazards associated with its geology and channel movement.

ORC director engineering, hazards and science Gavin Palmer said that the meeting will be held at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall on Wednesday 13 May from 7pm to 9pm.

The Arrow River has previously been affected by flooding and riverbank erosion.

The meeting should aid landowners decision-making regarding existing and future developments on land within and adjacent to the floodplain,” Dr Palmer said.

Maps of the floodplain, identifying land that may be affected by inundation, will be available at the meeting as well as the likely flood-hazard characteristics of a large flood.

According to ORC director stakeholder engagement Jane Leahy, council staff and local ORC councillors will be available at the meeting to answer any questions members of the public may have.
