Photo Update from the Long Beach Island Project

Last week, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner Bob Martin together with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials, U.S. Congressman Frank LoBiondo, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company and the LBI communities launched a major coastal construction project, the Long Beach Island Storm Damage Reduction Project.

This marked the beginning of the $128 million project, which will see the construction of 12.7 miles of dunes and beaches on the popular barrier island.

The project, designed to reduce damages from future storm events, is being funded through $1.2 billion appropriated by Congress to rebuild and strengthen New Jersey’s coastline to better protect shore communities following Superstorm Sandy in October 2012.
