The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredge vessel Yaquina is in Morro Bay cleaning up the harbor bottom.

The purpose of the dredging project is to remove sand and silt build up in order to provide a deeper, safer, more navigable channel.

Designed by USACE and built by Norfolk Shipbuilding & Drydock Corp., the Yaquina mission is to maintain federal navigation channels in the Pacific Northwest.

With the length of 200 ft and height of 100 ft, the vessel has hopper volume of 1,050 cubic yards and is purposely built to dredge and transport sandy material to an open-water relocation area.

The Yaquina will be working in Morro Bay until June 14.
