Wollongong Dredging Scheme About to Begin

Wollongong City Council will soon begin work on dredging and cleaning up the two ponds in the Wollongong Botanic Garden.

Council’s Curator Botanic Garden Paul Tracey said: “Council will conduct the works to improve the water quality by removing silt and creating a deeper pond. This will decrease the likelihood of algal blooms in the ponds and also improve the water flow. It will also allow the water plants, birds and other fauna to thrive in this picturesque area of the garden.

“We’ve conducted testing on the silt in the duck pond and found that it is suitable for re-use in the Botanic Garden. While we’re dredging the ponds we also will conduct further tests on the material being removed to ensure that it is safe to use as top dressing for the Botanic Garden lawns.”

During the work the ponds and access to the Kawasaki bridge will be closed for public safety.

Once the silt is removed from the ponds it will be kept on the Botanic Garden site and allowed to dry out. Following this it will be used as top dressing on the lawn area in the western section of the Botanic Garden.
