Tuggerah Dredging Scheme About to Start

A dredger is on site at The Entrance Channel as Wyong Shire Council prepares to improve water flow into Tuggerah Lakes.

Council’s Waterways and Coastal Section Manager, Mr Luke Sulkowski, said that the dredger is being set up to start the planned program.

The recent April storm gave us a head start on our dredging program and we will be well underway by the end of the month,” Mr Sulkowski said.

Sand will be pumped from the channel into the surf zone at North Entrance Beach where it will form banks in the ocean and help protect the beach from future storm events.

“Later in the program, as the dredger works its way closer to the mouth of the channel, we are looking at the option of pumping and distributing sand to nourish The Entrance Beach.”

These planned works are outlined in Council’s recently adopted 2015-19 Strategic Plan and jointly funded by Council and a grant from the NSW Rescuing Our Waterways Program.

Council’s Mayor, Doug Eaton OAM, said that maintaining the health of Tuggerah Lakes is a priority for Council and the community want to see more being done.

Dredging of the channel will be finished in time for the summer season – a popular time of year at The Entrance. These works will reactivate recreational activities on and around Tuggerah Lakes and encourage more visitors to the area,” concluded Mayor Eaton.
