Halcrow Prize for XBEACH Gravel Model

Robert McCall (coastal morphology expert), Pieter van Geer (coastal engineering expert) of Deltares, Gerd Masselink and Timothy Poate of the University of Plymouth will be awarded the Halcrow Prize for their scientific publication about the XBEACH gravel model.

The new numerical XBEACH gravel model will help agencies working with gravel beaches to improve coastal safety and, where necessary, to improve it.

Although gravel absorbs waves, the beaches are much less safe during storms than they appear.

Gravel beaches are commonly found in countries including the UK, USA, Canada, Argentina, New Zeeland and Japan. But they are also found on the coasts of northern Europe.

The prize will be officially awarded on 9 October 2015 at the annual ICE ceremony in London.
