Mackay Breakwater Reopens This Month

The Mackay breakwater is set to reopen to the public this month.

North Queensland Bulk Ports Chief Operating Officer Jeff Stewart-Harris said that a public event will be held on Sunday 23 August to celebrate the breakwater reopening.

Mr Stewart-Harris added that public access to the breakwater has been restricted owing to repair and upgrade works. This included repair of the damage caused by Cyclone Ului in 2010 and later Cyclone Dylan in 2014.

The breakwater bore substantial damage during Cyclone Dylan, which was made worse as it coincided with a king tide,” Mr Stewart-Harris said.

“In addition to these repairs we undertook a major upgrade to improve protection of the Mackay Marina and extend the design life.

“This has resulted in a much improved breakwater for the public.”
