Walu Bay Dredging Underway

Dredging operations in waterways along the Government Shipping jetty in Walu Bay, Suva, are currently underway, Fiji Sun informs.

This capital project has been long overdue, said Francis Kean, the Permanent Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport.

The last time the area was dredged was approximately 20 years ago,” he said.

Built-up of silt, illegal dumping of rubbish, irresponsible scrap metal dealers and illegal scuttling of ships have created unnecessary hazards and risk to the ships of the GSS fleet,” Kean added.

This dredging program was designated into three phases and the tender for phase one has been awarded to Pacific Building Solutions (PBS).
