Shoal Point Contract Awarded

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, has awarded a contract in the amount of $4.2 million to Midwest Construction Company, for construction repairs of Shoal Point Placement Area 3, 4 and 5.

The contractor is required to repair several sections of the containment levee.

Dredge material placement areas are necessary for the USACE Galveston District to maintain navigation along federal channels,” said Eduardo Irigoyen, a project manager in the USACE Galveston District’s Project Management Branch.

The completion of this project will close out the construction phase of the Texas City Deepening Project and allow the project sponsor, City of Texas City, to transfer full responsibility to the Corps for routine operations and maintenance activities.”

Work is expected to begin this month with an estimated completion date of February 2016.

Each year, the USACE Galveston District dredges approximately 30 to 40 million cubic yards of material from Texas channels to fulfill its mission of keeping waterways open for navigation and commerce (benefiting ports handling 500 million tons of commerce annually), explained Irigoyen.
