Dawlish Warren Beach Scheme Progressing

Work continues to progress on the £14 million Dawlish Warren beach management scheme. The estimated long-term monetary benefit of the Warren continuing to shelter communities and the main railway line from storms is £158 million.

Between May and August 2015, the Environment Agency carried out a number of surveys to gather information on the marine environment around Dawlish Warren and in the estuary mouth.

The Agency will continue to analyse the information from the surveys in more detail. Some of the findings will be used in computer models to help the team to understand more about how the currents and tides work in the estuary.

Also, the Agency will use the models to predict how dredging in different parts of the estuary could affect waves, currents and how sediment moves around. The models will help the team to choose the best area to take sediment from, without affecting the environment, water quality, birds, waves or the people that use the estuary for work and recreation.

The Environment Agency is planning a public exhibition for autumn 2015. This will provide more information about the scheme and an update on the scheme’s progress since last year’s exhibitions.
