Conestogo River Dredging Set to Begin

The Grand River Conservation Authority’s rehabilitation project of the 500 meter section dyke and channel on the Conestogo River in Drayton is set to begin the week of September 21, 2015.

The work must be carried out during a period of low flow in the river, which may affect the timing and total duration of the project.

It is expected that the project will be completed sometime between mid to late October.

The GRCA board awarded the contract for the work to R&M Construction at its August 28, 2015 meeting, through a tender process.

During the construction period, the section of the trail that runs along the Conestogo River from Main Street to Mill Street will be closed to the public for access by work equipment and for public safety. Barriers will be placed at both ends of the trail when the work begins.

The work will be carried out in two phases: upstream and then downstream of Main Street. The work upstream of Main Street will be accessed through the fire hall parking lot, while the work downstream will be accessed via the end of Mill Street.

The rehabilitation project will consist of the removal of coarse sediments that have accumulated along the channel, and removal of trees along the dyke.

This scheme will provide reduction of nuisance flooding levels in the upstream portions of the town.
