Public Exhibition Set for Dawlish Warren Scheme

The Environment Agency and Teignbridge District Council (TDC) are continuing work on the £14 million Dawlish Warren beach management scheme.

Following a number of surveys conducted, between May and August 2015, the Environment Agency continues with the sampling of the seabed. The teams collected ‘cores’ from Pole Sands to find out what type of sediment it is made of. Also, Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) were installed on the sea bed in the estuary.

A public exhibition about the scheme is being held on 26 November 2015 from 2pm to 8pm at the Langstone Cliff Hotel, Dawlish Warren. A range of information will be available including:

  • an overview of the scheme – how the beach and sand spit work to protect the estuary from flooding and the natural processes affecting Dawlish Warren and the estuary;
  • information about the new flood defense near Dawlish Warren Visitor Centre – its purpose and how it may look in the future as the sand spit changes;
  • an overview of the planned new defense at the neck of the sand spit;
  • an update on the beach recharge (the process of adding extra sand to the beach);
  • an update on dredging – how much sand will be needed, where it will come from, what will happen afterwards;
  • detail regarding gabion (rock filled wire cages) removal – where the gabions will be taken out, what will happen to the rock that is removed and what will happen to the dunes;
  • approximate timescales;
  • future changes – what the beach will look like afterwards and how it might gradually change over time;
  • survey and modelling results.

Members of the project team will also be there to answer any questions and to listen to people’s views.
