Greens Bayou Scheme Breaks Ground

Representatives of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, Harris County Flood Control District, Harris County Precinct 4 and the Greens Bayou Corridor Coalition gathered on the banks of Greens Bayou October 12 to ceremonially break ground on a $58 million partnership project.

This development scheme was designed to reduce flooding risks for homes and businesses in the Greens Bayou watershed.

Once completed, this project will help reduce flooding risks and damages during heavy rain events by safely storing excess floodwater and slowly releasing it back to the bayou when the threat of flooding has passed,” said Shakhar Misir, USACE Galveston District project manager.

The partnership project includes construction of 108 acres of stormwater detention and approximately 3.7 miles of channel conveyance improvements from Cutten Road to Veterans Memorial Drive.

Construction on the first phase of the project – excavation of the north cell of the Antoine Stormwater Detention Basin – is scheduled to begin in November.
