Picture of the Day: Mordecai Project

The dredging operations and marsh restoration at Mordecai Island, NJ are currently underway.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District, and its contractor Barnegat Bay Dredging Company of Harvey Cedars, are dredging critical shoals from the New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway and using the material to restore a portion of Mordecai Island marshland.

The island serves two important functions within Barnegat Bay: it provides habitat for wildlife and augments overall coastal resiliency for the backbay communities of Long Beach Island.

Located off the docks of the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club, the claw-shaped island currently covers 41 acres, although at one time it covered more than 70 acres.
