Picture of the Day: NJ Marsh Restoration

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District, and their contractor Barnegat Bay Dredging Company are conducting dredging operations and marsh restoration at Mordecai Island, NJ.

The USACE is removing critical shoals from the New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway and using the material to restore a portion of Mordecai Island marshland.

The island serves two important functions within Barnegat Bay: it provides habitat for wildlife and augments overall coastal resiliency for the backbay communities of Long Beach Island.

Located off the docks of the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club, the claw-shaped island currently covers 41 acres, although at one time it covered more than 70 acres.
