Another Award for PPA

Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA) has been recognized at the Lloyd’s List Australian Shipping and Maritime Industry Awards in Sydney on 19 November 2015 for its ground-breaking Tidal Model Project.

The esteemed annual event recognizes success and achievements by the Australian maritime industry.

PPA’s Tidal Model Project won the Logistics and Supply Excellence Award. The award recognizes operational excellence in the movement of freight and/or bulk goods, and demonstrates efficiency increases and throughput innovation.

CEO Roger Johnston said that the tidal model project is a world-first initiative developed by PPA, to accurately identify existing, deeper channel depths at the Port of Port Hedland.

The project resulted in the creation of a Lowest Astronomical Tide model, or ‘Hydroid’ unique to Port Hedland, which when combined with maintenance dredging, has achieved an extra depth of 71cms in the shipping channel.”

This increased draft has enabled PPA to significantly increase its export capacity, allowing port customers to safely load more product onto vessels, and has extended sailing windows for vessels to increase from six to eight on a single tide.

The Lloyd’s List Shipping and Maritime Award has capped off what has been an outstanding year of achievements for PPA, 18 months into operation,” he said.

The Tidal Model Project also won the Western Australian Premier’s Award in the Developing the Economy Category last month.
