Wellington to Extend Runway

Wellington Airport has just released draft reports in which the company is assessing the effects of the proposed runway extension project, including the Benefit Cost Analysis.

This marks the beginning of public consultation process that will enable everyone to get a thorough understanding of the project and provide feedback to the airport before the application is finalized.

In order to provide a longer runway at Wellington Airport it is necessary to construct a runway platform over reclaimed land.

Wellington Airport has a long history of land reclamation, together with substantial capital
investment to cater for growth. The last major extension to Wellington’s runway occurred in 1972.

A number of options have been considered for the project. It turned out that extending south into Lyall Bay is the most feasible engineering option.

It is estimated that approximately 800,000m³ to 1.1 million cubic meters of bulk fill would be required to complete the reclamation, together with approximately 580,000m³ of rock dyke materials (including armor layers). It will take 18 – 36 months to complete the reclamation.

The public consultation period for the draft ends on Friday, February 12th 2016.
