Clare County Works in Full Swing

Clare County Council has announced that storm remediation works will begin at a number of coastal locations in the County this week.

The phase two of the reconstruction of the Seawall at Kilkee is currently underway. Phase one was substantially completed for the summer of 2015 and phase two will be completed before the start of the 2016 season.

A contract has been signed with L&M Keating to repair existing concrete sea defenses damaged during a succession of storms in late 2013 and early 2014 at Whitestrand (Doonbeg), Rhynagonnaught, Carradotia (Moneypoint) and Cappagh.

Work is scheduled to get underway at Cappagh and Carradotia this week and will be completed in early 2016. Storm repair works at Whitestrand and Rhynagonnaught will start in early January and are expected to be completed by April.

Clare County Council has also outlined the updated situation regarding a number of other storm remediation projects.

To date, storm repair works have been completed at Ballyvaughan Pier, New Quay Pier, Whitestrand Miltown Malbay, Spanish Point, Quilty village, Labasheeda, Rineville and Clahane. Coastal protection works by Cotter Plant Hire at Knock is nearing completion within the next fortnight, while work by Guerin & Considine on the construction of sea defenses and the repair of the pier at Liscannor is ongoing.

The proposed coastal protection works at Lahinch are at planning stage. The works involve the strengthening of the existing revetment, the repair of the steps and slipways, and the repair of the promenade and the existing seawall.

A Coastal Erosion and Flood Risk Management Study has been completed at Clohaninchy near Quilty, and has been sent to the Office of Public Works for its consideration. Consultants have been appointed to undertake Coastal Erosion and Flood Risk Management Studies at Liscannor Bay (Liscannor, Clahane and Lahinch), Mal Bay (Whitestrand, Miltown Malbay, Spanish Point, Quilty village), Kilbaha, Flaggy Shore/Aughinish Island and Doolin.

Funding has recently been received by Clare County Council from the OPW for the repair of embankments along the Shannon Estuary and other coastal protection works along Clare’s Atlantic coast.

The proposed works at Kilcredaun in Carrigaholt, meanwhile, are at design stage.
