Tonle Bassac River in Need of Dredging

In order to help waterway transport, the sand dredging operations will soon be underway on several locations along the Tonle Bassac river, a spokesman from the Cambodian Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) confirmed yesterday.

The government has identified some 30 to 40 spots stretching from the southeastern outskirts of Phnom Penh all the way to the Vietnamese border that require dredging to ease transport along the river, Meng Saktheara said.

“Therefore, the ministry plans to arrange the sand dredging in the areas that need to be deepened,” he said, adding that it would begin before Khmer New Year in April.

Environment Ministry said that any company wanting to dredge must submit a report evaluating the environmental and social impacts before it can be given the green light, The Phnom Penh Post informs.
