Tender Announced for Twente Canal Expansion

Rijkswaterstaat has invited bidders to submit their offers for the design and implementation of the Twente Canal Expansion – Phase 2.

The Twente canal forms the connection of the IJssel with companies and ports in Lochem and Twente.

It is anticipated that the operations, including deepening and widening of the channels, will cover a stretch of approximately 19 kilometers in total.

The deadline for this tender is March 30, 2016.

The contract will include works on:

  • front between the river and the locks Eefde;
  • the main channel between lock and lock Delden Hengelo;
  • the main channel between lock Hengelo and Enschede ports;
  • the side channel from the division point to Almelo.

The project is of great economic importance and strengthens the competitive position of inland waterways as an environmentally friendly alternative to other forms of transport.
