North Topsail Beach to Get New Sand

The $2.4 million dredging operations are scheduled to begin this week on sections of Onslow County’s New River, the Time Warner Cable News reports.

The main goal of this cleanup scheme is to make a positive impact on the livelihood of more than 800 fishermen in the county.

“Keeping the channels open and keeping the navigational route available to our fishermen, it means that they can continue their trade and their livelihood,” said Onslow County Board of Commissioners Chairman Barbara Ikner.

“This project will definitely help out with erosion on the north end provide a beach for the people on the north end for the summer,” said North Topsail Beach Mayor Fred Burns.

The two-phase dredging scheme will also provide a lot of new sand for North Topsail Beach.

“Hopefully this sand will actually have us a beach through the summer and we’ll be able to walk around the end of the beach and help re-nourish our beach. It’s a very positive step forward,” added Burns.

This dredging project will be completed by the end of this month.
