Guernsey: Three Sites Identified for Land Reclamation

The Public Services Department – States of Guernsey is looking to identify a new site for disposing of inert waste from construction and demolition projects once the current Longue Hougue land reclamation is complete.

A cross-departmental working party has identified more than 40 potential options. They range from land-raising projects to sea defense improvement and from infilling quarries to exporting material.

Having assessed all of these, the working party’s preference is to develop a new coastal land reclamation project, similar to Longue Hougue. Various sites have been assessed and a potential shortlist of three locations identified.

They include extending the existing Longue Hougue land reclamation site to the south, or a new project north of St Sampson’s Harbor. These would be estimated to provide capacity for up to 12 years, based on recent rates of fill at the current site.

The third site, which would provide capacity for up to 15 years, would involve infilling to the east of the QEII Marina at St Peter Port Harbor. This would provide the most new land, creating an area larger than the current North Beach, which was itself a land reclamation project.

It is intended any of the three sites would be self-financing, through disposal charges over the life of the project and future land value. This would include initial development costs, largely to create the outer “rock armor”, which depending on the location could be up to £30 million.
