Final Stage of Turangi Food Protection Works Underway

The final stage of a three-year, $400,000 maintenance program to improve Turangi’s flood protection scheme has just got underway.

According to the Waikato Regional Council, this third phase will focus on the existing rock structure at the end of Te Herekiekie St, Turangi. It follows two earlier phases of the work over the past several years.

The structure is designed to help protect the Te Herekiekie St stopbank beside the Tongariro River from erosion.

Rock material is being carted to the site and stockpiled on the Te Herekiekie St reserve ready for placement. An excavator will be used to place rock along the face of the flood protection structure.

The council’s Taupo constituency councilor Kathy White said: “Bolstering the Te Herekiekie St stopbank’s erosion protection will support the long term integrity of the scheme and the investment made in protecting Turangi from flooding.”

The work is expected to take approximately four weeks.
