Cashman Nabs $3.4 Million Beals Harbor Dredging Contract

Maintenance dredging of the Beals Harbor and Pig Island Gut Federal Navigation Projects in Beals, Maine, will be completed under the terms of a $3.4 million contract recently awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.

Work will be accomplished by Cashman Dredging and Marine Contracting Company of Quincy, Mass.

Dredging is scheduled to start on or about November 8, 2016 and take several months to complete.

“Work consists of mechanically dredging approximately 100,000 cubic yards of clay, silt and sand, with unconfined disposal at the Mark Island Disposal Site, about 5 miles away,” said Project Manager Jack Karalius, of the Corps’ New England District, Programs and Project Management Division in Concord, Mass.

“Removal of about 30 tons of heavy boulders, large debris and derelict moorings also will be required.”

Beals Harbor, known locally as Barneys Cove, is located on the northwestern side of Beals Island along Moosabec Reach, opposite Jonesport and about 38 miles southwest of Eastport. The project consists of a 10-foot-deep anchorage in the harbor.

The contract was awarded on April 20, 2016.
