Turangi Flood Protection Program Completed

New works to bolster Turangi’s flood protection scheme have been completed very successfully, ahead of schedule and under budget, according to the Waikato Regional Council.

The work, carried out by contractor Precision Earthworks Ltd, involved the placement of new rock material to maintain protection for a key stopbank adjoining the Tongariro River at the end of Te Herekiekie St. Rock material carted to the site was placed along the stopbank by an excavator.

“The council’s team and contractor have done well to complete this under budget and ahead of schedule. The new erosion protection will support the long term integrity of the town’s flood protection scheme and the investment made in protecting Turangi from flooding,” said the council’s Taupo constituency councilor Kathy White.

Waikato Regional Council’s Taupo office reports the stopbank protection is now fully rehabilitated.

The work was the final stage of a three-year, $400,000 maintenance program to improve the Turangi flood protection scheme.
