Esteros Dredging Scheme Moves Ahead

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has collected 720 truckloads of dredged material during its 49-day “3-in-1” cleanup drive at seven esteros in Metro Manila.

The project is a combination of the agency’s Estero Blitz, Lingap Barangay and Linis Palengke programs.

Director Baltazar Melgar, head of MMDA Flood Control and Sewerage Management Office, said that from March 1 until April 29, the agency conducted clearing, dredging and de-silting of seven major esteros such as North and South Antipolo Open Canal, Estero de San Miguel, Estero de Quiapo, Estero Tripa de Gallina, Cut-Cut Creek and Pasong Diablo River.

The cleanup operation has yielded a total of 6,864 cubic meters of dredged material.

Under the Estero Blitz program, the MMDA declogs and dredges esteros, creeks and drainages in flood-prone areas in Metro Manila to prevent flooding during the rainy season.

Melgar said that the workers will continue with the dredging operations until esteros are completely cleared.
