Greater Wellington Council: Consent for Paekakariki Ceawall

Paekakariki residents are a step closer to having a new seawall on their beach, with the consent received from the Greater Wellington Regional Council.

The seawall will be constructed out of timber, concrete and rock and will replace the old timber one which has been in place for about 35 years.

The consent covers the new seawall, as well as the existing rock revetments at either end of the wall, for a period of 35 years.

A community design group was heavily involved in choosing the concept design to ensure the seawall reflected community values in Paekakariki.

“The community had plenty of time to discuss their preferred design in terms of amenity, as well as engineering issues such as access to dry beach, recreational possibilities and preferred materials,” said Paekakariki-Raumati Ward Councillor Janet Holborow.

Now the project has been consented, work will commence on the detailed design of the seawall followed by construction. It is expected to be completed in 2018 with an estimated price tag of $11 million.

The Paekakariki seawall is one of the priority projects identified in the long term plan 2015-35.
