Broomhill Sands Shortlisted for More Industry Awards

A scheme delivered by Team Van Oord on behalf of the Environment Agency has been named a finalist in two industry awards schemes.

The Broomhill Sands Coastal Defense Scheme has been named a finalist in two categories in the 2016 Constructing Excellence in London and South East Awards, and in the ICE South East England Engineering Excellence Awards 2016.

The winners will be announced at the Constructing Excellence in London and South East Awards dinner in London on 30 June.

The works at Broomhill Sands extend across 2.5 km of beach and include:

  • a 1.8 km length of rock revetment requiring 265,000 tonne of rock armor and a new concrete wave wall;
  • recharging 700 m of shingle beach and replacing the existing timber groynes;
  • widening and improving the existing access way along the top of the sea defenses, including pedestrian access steps and ramps down to the beach.

Earlier this year, the scheme received the Innovation Award at the 2016 Environment Agency Project Excellence Awards which recognize excellent project work undertaken by the Environment Agency and its partners.

And last year the scheme was the recipient of the Environment Agency Exemplar Award which is presented annually to recognize outstanding health, safety and environmental performance in the delivery of its projects.
