USACE Presents East River Dredging Plans

The USACE, New York District, proposes to perform maintenance dredging in the East River – South Brother Island, NY Federal Navigation Project with subsequent placement of the dredged material at the Historic Area Remediation Site (HARS).

The proposed maintenance dredging would remove approximately 400,000 cubic yards of sediment to a depth of 35 ft. below Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) plus 1 ft allowable over-depth.

Due to restrictions found in the Water Quality Certificate, the proposed work can only be performed by a large mechanical dredge with a closed environmental clamshell bucket, the Government said in its announcement.

Additional multiple ocean-going barges and tug boats are needed to perform the work during dredging, transport and placement of the dredged material.

The work is estimated to cost between $1 mln and $5 mln.

It is the intention of the Government to award the contract in July 2016 and issue the NTP on or about 1 October 2016.
