Grafton Flood Risk Reduction Project on the Table

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, is evaluating a Department of the Army (DA) permit application from the City of Grafton for the proposed Grafton Flood Risk Reduction Project.

The application is being evaluated under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act which regulates the discharge of dredged or fill material in waters of the United States.

Approximately 1,500 residential, commercial and public structures will be removed from the regulated floodplain by constructing a 2.9–mile long bypass channel to divert Park River flows around the city when they exceed 2,000 cfs.

In addition, 9.3 miles of earthen tieback levees will be constructed to protect the city from overland flow. Construction will result in 12.4 acres of permanent and 18.0 acres of temporary wetland impacts.

Approximately 1,310 linear feet of the Park River will be permanently and 540 linear feet will be temporarily impacted. The city proposes to mitigate permanent wetland impacts along the sideslopes of the bypass channel.

Deadline for sending written comments is June 10, 2016.
