Haa Alifu Coastal Protection Scheme Starts

Coastal protection works at Haa Alifu atoll Hoarafushi officially started yesterday, according to the Republic of Maldives’ Ministry of Environment and Energy.

The ceremony was inaugurated by the President of Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Abdulla Yaameen Abdul Gayyoom.

The project, worth around $1.2 million, is being carried out by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

This coastal protection scheme includes construction of 570 m rock revetment at the north east side of the island and 230 m rock revetment on the south east side of the island.

The main goal of this project is to renourish and protect the areas of the island vulnerable to erosion from further deterioration.
