Fareham and Gosport Strategy Gets Environmental Agency OK

The Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership, on behalf of Fareham and Gosport Borough Councils, has developed a coastal management Strategy stretching from the River Hamble to Portchester.

The Strategy sets out the preferred coastal management approaches designed to help reduce the risk of coastal flooding and erosion to over 2,800 properties in the local area over the next 100 years.

The estimated value of the work recommended by the Strategy is in the region of £47 million.

The Strategy was adopted by both Gosport and Fareham Borough Councils in spring 2015 and was approved and signed off by the Environment Agency in April 2016.

A large proportion of the funding required to deliver this aspirational Strategy will have to come from sources other than traditional government funding. There will be a need to think creatively and deliver differently to ensure that the recommendations are implemented for the communities of Gosport and Fareham.

The plans outline measures that would prevent over £700 million of damages over the next 100 years if the necessary funding can be sourced.
