Funding Secured for Jackson Creek Dredge Project

The Virginia Port Authority Board in Norfolk has awarded Middlesex County a $118,000 grant for dredging the mouth and channel leading into Jackson Creek in Deltaville, according to the Southside Sentinel.

Commenting this, Middlesex County Administrator, Matt Walker, said that the grant is going to cover most of the cost of dredging.

“We were up against some heavy hitters. Cape Charles was requesting $500,000 from the [Port] Authority and only received $50,000. I think we were the only community to get the total amount we requested,” Walker added.

The funding stipulates that the dredging has to be done in the “federal congressional designated channel”, the Sentinel informs.

This is a second phase of the Jackson Creek dredge project. The first phase was done in 2013 at a cost of $102,570.

The funding for that project came from a Port Authority Grant and public and private sources.
