Navigability Survey in Bangladesh Nears Completion

A navigability survey on the country’s 53 river routes will be completed by the end of this month, according to Bangladeshi Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan.

With financial support from the World Bank, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) is conducting the survey under the project Inland Waterway Navigability Study, said Khan.

An agreement with Royal Haskoning DHV was signed in January 2016 to complete the task, and its survey related activities are now progressing, the Financial Express BD informs.

“The survey will complete by June 2016. Development projects will be taken following the recommendations of the study,” Khan said.

The Shipping Minister also said that the government has a plan to dredge some 30 river routes in the upcoming fiscal year.

Under the capital dredging project and other related projects, the dredging operations now continue on 37 waterways.
