Dredging Worker Finds Military Shell in Otago Harbor

At the request of Police, the Defense Force has carried out a controlled explosion on part of what is believed to be an historic military artillery shell.

It was found in Otago Harbor a few days ago by a worker connected to the dredging of the shipping channel.

Police sent photographs of the device to the Defense Force to assist in assessing the shell.

On Sunday, 26 June 2016, a controlled explosion of the device was carried out.

The head of the shell is thought to be more than 100 years old, and may have been used in coastal defenses.
