GLDD Secures Over $8 Million for Delaware Beach Fill Project

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company LLC of Oak Brook, Illinois, has won an $8.02 million Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach beach fill nourishment contract.

According to the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District, this 3rd periodic nourishment cycle will be completed by the end of February 2017.

The purpose of the project is to provide coastal storm damage reduction and shoreline protection along 2.5 miles of ocean front from the northern end of Rehoboth Beach to the southern end of Dewey Beach, Delaware.

Initial construction works on the project were completed in July 2005 with the other project features, including dune grass, dune fencing and crossovers completed in January 2006. Due to limited funds, 2nd periodic nourishment was managed between November 2008- June 2009 for Dewey beach only and October 2011- February 2012 for Bethany and S. Beth.

Overall, around 1.7 million cubic yards of sand will be pumped from an offshore borrow area in order to construct the beach and dune systems along the 13,500 feet of the Delaware coast.

The project is being managed by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC).
