Land Reclamation for Hulhule Airport Expansion Begins

Gulf Cobla Tennssor Maldives Pvt Ltd (GCTM) has started the land reclamation operations for the expansion of the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport on Hulhule, Maldives.

According to the GCTM’s announcement, around 4 million m³ of sand from the inner lagoon will be reclaimed and used for the new runway.

The inner lagoon was also the source of more than 2 million m³ of sand for the previous expansion work back in 2012.

Using the same borrow area minimizes the environmental impact significantly compared to opening new borrow areas for hopper dredgers outside the lagoon.

GCTM initially deployed their cutter suction dredger (CSD) Deira Bay for the project, and after approximately two months their CSD Khaleej Bay will be mobilized from the UAE to increase the progress in order to meet the completion date requirements.

Beside the land reclamation operations, GTCM will take care of the revetment works protecting newly created land for the runway.
