VIDEO: Widening of Juliana Canal by DEME

DEME Group has just released this very interesting video about the progress on the Juliana Canal widening scheme.

The depth of the canal bed was brought back to its original 4.9 meters across its entire length, from Limmel to Maasbracht, in 2014.

After completion of this phase, DEME started with the widening of the canal, with an expected finish in 2017.

The works consist of placing a 4 km steel dam and moving the 2.5 km embankment. These works will enable, in the near future, to provide access to the Juliana Canal to a larger navigation class (class Vb).

This video shows the different steps of widening the Juliana Canal, taking into account the availability of the canal for passing shipment throughout the execution of works:

    • Sheet piling;
    • Removing existing scour protection;
    • Dredging;
    • Profiling;
    • Constructing new watertight canal bed.
