Launching Ceremony of TSHD Minerva Set for Next Week

The launching ceremony of 3,500m³ trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Minerva will take place on December 3, 2016, at the Royal IHC shipyard in Kinderdijk, the Netherlands.

The Minerva and Scheldt River, being built for DEME, will be the first dredging vessels in the world that will be equipped with dual fuel engines and capable of operating in full LNG mode.

The latter is currently under construction at Royal IHC shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel.

The TSHD Minerva will use the “dual fuel” technology for the main engines, capable of using either liquefied natural gas (LNG) or conventional marine fuels.

This vessel will be equipped with 80cm suction tube, suitable for dredging to a depth of 30m. The dredged material will be discharged through three bottom doors to a floating line or rainbow nozzle.

DEME and Royal IHC recently won a DPC Innovation Award in London for the world’s first liquefied natural gas-powered TSHDs.
