Meeting on McKelvey Flood Scheme Today

After years of planning and design, the Santa Clara Valley Water District is preparing to construct flood protection improvements along Permanente Creek.

Regarding this, the district will host a meeting on the McKelvey Park flood detention basin project today, from 7-9 p.m. in St. Joseph School, Mountain View, CA.

Once completed, the Permanente Creek Flood Protection Project will protect at least 2,200 properties in Mountain View and Los Altos, create recreational opportunities and enhance the environment.

The McKelvey Park flood detention basin is one of the project elements nearing construction. Construction is expected to begin in January 2017 and last for approximately two years.

Project goals

The project goal is to provide flood protection to homes and businesses in the Permanente Creek watershed using a natural flood protection approach and to:

  • Provide natural flood protection for approximately 2,200 properties (which exceeds the project requirement of protecting 1,664 properties);
  • Prevent flooding of Middlefield Road and Central Expressway;
  • Prevent potential damages in excess of $48 million (1999 value);
  • Enhance 8 acres of wildlife habitat in Rancho San Antonio County Park.

  • Floodwalls and levees north of U.S. 101;
  • Channel widening and steepening for existing channels along Permanente Creek;
  • Flood detention area at City of Mountain View’s McKelvey Park;
