Jan De Nul Completes Maputo Port Dredging Scheme

Jan De Nul Group has finished dredging the 76 km long navigational channel that leads to the Port of Maputo in Mozambique.

The company’s cutter dredger J.F.J. De Nul, hopper dredger De Lapérouse, along with some other dredgers, delivered the project several months ahead of schedule.

According to Jan De Nul, the company is presently finishing the out-survey and demobilization of the equipment.

The main goal of this dredging project was to enable access for ships of up to 80,000 tons, making Maputo Port more competitive in regional and international shipping markets.

In order to do so, Jan De Nul has dredged over 10 million cubic meters of soil from the shipping channel.

The Maputo Port dredging contract was awarded to JDN back in April 2016. The first of three dredgers mobilized by JDN arrived in Mozambique on May 20, and the first dredging cycle started on May 21.

Also involved in the project was Van Oord’s trailing suction hopper dredger HAM 310.
