Duck Beach Nourishment Project to Start in Late May

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock (GLDD), the contractor for the Town of Duck Beach Nourishment Project and for the Towns of Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk projects, has provided an updated projected schedule for the beach nourishment work.

The construction dates for Duck, originally scheduled for April 1 to approximately June 1, 2017, is now projected to begin mid to late May and continue through mid to late July, the release said.

Mobilization operations, including laying sub-line and assembling land based machinery, will begin approximately one month prior to construction to be ready once the dredge is on site.

The Liberty Island, the dredger proposed by the contractor to undertake the Duck project, is currently in the GLDD’s shipyard, undergoing maintenance.

Once it leaves the shipyard, it is scheduled to complete work on another project and then mobilize for the Town of Duck Beach Nourishment Project.

A second dredger, the larger Ellis Island, is scheduled to mobilize for the Town of Kitty Hawk Project in mid-June. The Liberty Island will work jointly with the Ellis Island once it completes work in Duck.

A presentation with question and answer session by and with the Beach Nourishment Consultants, Coastal Planning and Engineering and GLDD, is scheduled at the Town Council’s Annual Retreat.

This presentation will take place on Wednesday, February 15 at 1:30 p.m. in the Paul F. Keller Meeting Hall.
