Federal Funding for Contrecoeur Port Expansion Project

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is making federal funding available for the proposed Contrecoeur Port Terminal Expansion Project, located in Contrecoeur, Quebec.

According to the agency, this Participant Funding Program is aimed to assist the participation of the public and Indigenous groups in the federal environmental assessment of the proposed port project.

Funding is available for eligible individuals and groups to assist their participation in upcoming steps of the environmental assessment, which include reviewing and providing comments on the Environmental Impact Statement or on the draft Environmental Assessment Report, and the potential environmental assessment conditions, reported the agency.

The Montreal Port Authority proposes the construction of a container port terminal with a maximum annual capacity of 1.15 million containers on its property located in Contrecoeur, approximately 40 kilometers downstream from Montreal, Quebec.

The project would include the construction of a 675-meter dock for two berths to accommodate vessels between 39,000 and 75,400 deadweight tonnage. The project would also include a seven track classification yard, a container storage and handling area, an intermodal rail yard, support facilities, rail and road accesses, a truck control area and a viaduct on Route 132.
