Good progress continues to be made towards constructing a flood protection scheme for Hawick, the Scottish Borders Council just announced.
The scheme is currently in its outline design phase, which aims to prove that a flood protection scheme is feasible and can be delivered within the town.
“If the scheme is successful through the statutory process this year, then we can move the project to detailed design stage, where the precise detail of every aspect of the project will be defined to allow contractors to price the works in 2018/19,” the announcement stated.
“This will allow us to look in detail at all the traffic management proposals along the 5.6 kilometer length of the scheme over the two year construction period to ensure that access to private residences and business is maintained at all times, while protecting the safe passage of pedestrians.”
Ewan Doyle, Project Management Team Leader, said: “The community’s input to the scheme’s development in the last two years has been fundamental to the successful delivery of the project to date, allowing the project to stay on schedule, which is critical to obtaining the funding commitment of 80 per cent from the Scottish Government in 2018/19 for the main works.”
Councillors will be asked to give final approval for the scheme, which is expected to take place in September 2017.
Approval will decide the scheme’s program and if the project will be successfully funded by the Scottish Government.
