USACE Releases Update on the Banana River Dredging

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, has just announced that ongoing dredging work on the Banana River, known as Cut 13, will affect Canaveral Lock hours today.

According to the Corps, dredging will occur along Canaveral Lock’s west approach wall requiring the lock to be closed 7AM to 11 AM and 12 PM to 4 PM (Tuesday, 18 April 2017). The Lock normal hours are 6 AM to 9:30 PM.

USACE also announced that dredges BAYONET POINT and TIGER POINT will be working in the area, urging mariners “to transit at their slowest safe speed to minimize wake and proceed with caution around dredging equipment and pipeline.

Earlier this month, Florida Dredge and Dock (FDD) started hydraulic dredging operations in a portion of the Banana River, known as Cut 13.

Cut 13 begins just North of the bridge where 528 (The Bee Line) crosses Banana River and extends north approximately 14,000 ft.

FDD will be also dredging a small area of the Canaveral Barge Canal just north of 528 and immediately West of the Canaveral Locks, as well as a small area of Kar’s Park access channel, which intersects cut 13 approximately 9,400 ft. north of the Canaveral Barge Canal.

The completion of this dredging program is set for September 2017.
