Green Light for Port of Kaliningrad Dredging Project

An expert commission of the Russian environment agency has issued Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval for the Port of Kaliningrad maintenance dredging project (2017-2024), reports FSUE Rosmorport.

The project includes dredging annually up to 1.25 million cbm of materials that will be transported to a transfer station for further pumping to onshore disposal sites or underwater dumping.

According to Rosmorport, the overall volume of materials to be excavated within the port basin between 2017 and 2024 will exceed 10 million cbm.

The project consists of dredging the Kaliningrad Sea Channel, inland harbors of the Kaliningrad port (Volnaya and Industrial), approaches to the dredged material receiving and transfer station, as well as terminals and berths of the seaport.

The EIA report said that during the dredging it is planned to conduct environmental monitoring.

The report also added that implementation of this project will ensure the safe passage of vessels to the berths and terminals of the seaport of Kaliningrad.
