Ortley Beach Replenishment Starts Next Week

The start of the Ocean County storm damage reduction project has been delayed due to late completion of a Weeks Marine project in Florida.

According to the report from the Toms River Council latest meeting, the Ortley Beach replenishment has been delayed for late May.

The landing pipe and transfer piping for the interim dune project arrived on the site last Thursday, May 11. Bulldozers and loaders are also on site and the field offices for the contractor and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are in place, reported the town.

Township Engineer Robert Chankalian added that the replenishment will begin May 24, starting at 7th Avenue and moving northward from there. The project is expected to be completed in about 2 weeks, barring any further delays.

Ortley Beach, which sustained catastrophic property damage from Superstorm Sandy, will receive approximately 267,000 cubic yards of sand, creating an approximately 225-foot-wide beach.

The $128 million northern Ocean County project entails 11 million cubic yards of sand covering some 14 miles of coastline along the Barnegat Peninsula, protecting the communities of Point Pleasant Beach, Bay Head, Mantoloking, Brick, Toms River, Lavallette, Seaside Heights, Seaside Park and Berkeley Township.
